One hundred ten AIAMC members gathered in New Orleans on March 27th and 28th for meeting two of the National Initiative (NI): Improving Patient Care through GME. Meeting participants represented 38 NI teams from 35 AIAMC-member institutions.
Meeting two was focused on the “Do” of the PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act) cycle and was designed to equip participants with the tools needed to successfully:
- Identify types of outcome measures applicable to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives;
- Refine a work plan for his/her project including objectives, action steps, data collection, outcome measures, and timeline;
- Assess how barriers and best practices from other participating organizations may be applicable to his/her project;
- Delineate suggested changes or improvements to his/her project based upon reactor panel feedback.
Prathibha Varkey, MBBS, MPH, MHPE, Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, opened the meeting with an overview of issues and solutions related to the measurement of data in QI projects. Dr. Varkey presented several examples of medical education quality measures that have been utilized in recently published literature.
Meeting attendees divided into smaller groups to learn more about data collection, lessons learned from NI Phase I and to participate in “reactor panels” and receive constructive feedback from their peers. Small group constituency sessions were also held for quality leaders, administrators, faculty and residents. Each group’s designated leader guided discussion regarding their role on their respective National Initiative team, and discussion focused upon best practices of successful teams.
Individual teams met to reflect upon their learnings and to map out an action plan for the
next six months. Teams discussed needed adjustments to their projects and how these
changes may impact timelines.
Meeting #3 (“Study”) will be held October 8th and 9th in Minneapolis.
