DESCRIPTION OF INITIATIVE
Four meetings will be held between March 2007 and March 2008. Thirty-three participants from 20 AIAMC-member teaching hospitals in the United States were selected to participate based upon a written application and their demonstrated leadership. Also included in this select group will be national leaders in GME and QI. Simply stated, this series will bring together the nation’s best and brightest.
At the end of the series, our findings will be professionally written and published.
VIDEO MESSAGE FROM DON BERWICK
The Alliance is delighted that our colleagues at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) are endorsing and supporting our important National Initiative (NI) work. James Conway, Senior Vice President, IHI, is a participant in the Initiative, and Donald Berwick, MD, MPP, President and CEO, communicates his collaborative encouragement in the following video message. This was originally shown to all NI participants at our first meeting held March 31st and April 1st in Austin, Texas.

MISSION, VISION AND GOALS OF INITIATIVE
Mission
The mission of the National Initiative is to improve quality of care, patient safety and GME among participating organizations through leadership and integration of GME in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Vision
The National Initiative will be a landmark contribution to patient care and GME by establishing a new national network – with a fully developed supporting infrastructure –
to advance patient care through GME, resulting in increased recognition and resource allocation for GME programs
As a result of the National Initiative, three years from now AIAMC will be involved in the following activities:
- Publication of a regular, national report on “The State of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Through GME”
- Several annual collaboratives with full supporting infrastructure
- Collaborative relationships with other organizations working on related issues and participation as a supportive institution at annual IHI meetings
- Annual national conference on GME integration into quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
- Collaborative research among members backed by external funding
Long-Term Goals:
- It has become unthinkable not to fully engage faculty and residents in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
- JCAHO and CMS have adopted results from the National Initiative as standards and best practices
- Physician education has been reoriented toward outcomes and teams
- Metrics have been fully defined on the impact of integrating GME with quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
Short-Term Goals:
- Identify and share best practices – models that work – to “hardwire” faculty and residents into QI
- Develop mechanisms of support for and communication among participants
- Improve the understanding of the intersection of GME and quality improvement and patient safety
- Integrate board and senior management interests into the National Initiative
- Accelerate the 5 Million Lives Campaign at member institutions
Action Plan:
- Catalogue successful initiatives, best practices of AIAMC members and desired member institutions
- Provide tools and resources to participants to share learning
- Ensure the required project management support for the Initiative
- Involve upper management of participating institutions
- Develop collaborative relationships with IHI and other institutions active in quality improvement and patient safety
- Synthesize and consolidate approaches to quality improvement and patient safety of IHI, IOM, Baldrige, ACGME, AAMC, JCAHO, AAHC, CMS, state boards of medicine
- Develop a publication strategy and draft articles reporting the results of the National Initiative

AUGUST 2007 UPDATE
| |
The second of four planned meetings was held August 3rd and 4th in Minneapolis. Each NI participant identified a project that integrates graduate medical education into a quality improvement or patient safety initiative being carried out at his/her AIAMC-member institution. These NI projects support IHI’s 5 Million Lives Campaign as follows:
Hand-Offs: Three teams are working on the key focus areas of electronic medical record, inpatient to outpatient and shift to shift transition teams.
Infection Control: Two teams are working on preventing central line infections and reducing methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection.
Medication Safety: One team is working on preventing adverse drug events (ADEs) and preventing harm from high-alert medications.
The work of the National Initiative will produce data that shows improvement in the quality of care and patient safety as a result of faculty and resident involvement in the design, leadership, and implementation of improvement initiatives. The Initiative will produce at least preliminary data by the time of its concluding meeting in March of 2008. To be on track with this objective, NI participants have been charged with showing at least initial data by the end of January 2008, leaving the month of February to develop progress reports for our March meeting. Make it a point to regularly visit www.aiamc.org for updates regarding this exciting project!
